What is Self-Publishing?

Self-Publishing is the business side of writing. A self-publisher takes on the role of preparing his or her book for the marketplace. As the publisher, you assume all financial risks and rewards associated with selling and distributing your written work.

What is the difference between 'self-publishing' and 'vanity' or 'subsidy' publishing?

If you self-publish, you are financially responsible for the costs of the production (editing, layout, cover design, marketing), sales and distribution of your work. All proceeds from the sales of your book go to you, the author. You, the author, hold all rights to your work. You have control of the publishing process. Vanity or Subsidy publishing is different in that often times you, the author, still assume all of the financial risk in bringing your book to market BUT you contract with a publishing company that holds rights to your work and pays you royalties (or a percentage of book sales). The vanity publisher provides publishing packages offering various services in the production of your book. They have control of the publishing process. Vanity or Subsidy publishers charge you up front for the preparation and printing of your book AND they charge you a percentage of each book sold.
